Atiku will face defeat: On Wednesday, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), announced his intention to thwart former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in his future presidential ambitions.
In a statement conveyed by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, Wike expressed no remorse over Atiku’s decision not to select him as his vice-presidential candidate during the lead-up to the 2023 election. The tension between the two stems from the contentious PDP primaries of 2022, where Wike anticipated being nominated for the vice-presidential position, but Atiku chose former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa instead.
Atiku will face defeat: In a recent conversation with Adesina Giwa-Osagie, Atiku remarked that he feels “no regrets” about overlooking Wike for the 2023 vice-presidential role. He explained that he allowed the party to make the decision rather than choosing on his own.
“Atiku noted that after facing criticism for not consulting broadly when he selected Peter Obi as his running mate in 2019, he asked the PDP to form a committee to propose three candidates for 2023,” he elaborated.
The committee ultimately ranked Okowa as their top recommendation, placing Wike second and former Akwa Ibom Governor Udom Emmanuel third.
“So I went with the top choice,” he concluded.
In response, Olayinka reiterated that Wike harbors no regrets about losing the vice-presidential nomination to Okowa.
On social media platform X, Olayinka posted: “Two years after causing @OfficialPDPNig to lose a winnable presidential election, @atiku is explaining why he didn’t select @GovWike as his running mate and claims he has no regrets.
“Someone should remind our habitual presidential candidate that Wike similarly has no regrets about ensuring his failure in that election and will continue to work towards his defeat in the future.”
