Senator Natasha Akpoti case: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District.
The Commission announced this decision after its regular weekly meeting on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. According to INEC, the petition—submitted alongside six bags of documents containing signatures from over half of the 474,554 registered voters in the district—failed to meet the required legal criteria. Specifically, the petitioners did not provide complete contact details for their representatives, as mandated by Clause 1(f) of INEC’s Regulations and Guidelines for Recall, 2024. Instead, the petition only included a vague address, “Okene, Kogi State,” and listed only the telephone number of the lead petitioner.
INEC further stated that it would explore alternative means to notify the petitioners’ representatives and reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the recall process transparently and in accordance with the law. The Commission also urged the public to disregard misinformation circulating on social media regarding the matter.
Still on Senator Natasha Akpoti case
INEC emphasized that the recall process is strictly guided by the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and its own regulations. It reiterated that once a petition meets the required submission criteria, it will proceed with verifying the signatures in an open process using the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). Petitioners and the senator facing recall will have the right to nominate agents to observe the verification, with independent observers and the media also accredited to monitor the process.
INEC concluded that if the petitioners comply fully with the requirements, it will announce the next steps in accordance with the law. In the meantime, the Commission is working to contact the petitioners through alternative means.
