Rwanda Severs Diplomatic Ties with Belgium, Expels Belgian Diplomats Over DRC Conflict

Rwanda expels Belgian diplomats

Rwanda expels Belgian diplomats: Rwanda has officially severed diplomatic relations with Belgium amid rising tensions over the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). In a statement issued on Monday, Rwanda’s foreign ministry ordered all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, citing Belgium’s alleged bias in the regional dispute and its efforts to mobilize opposition against Rwanda on the international stage.

Belgium’s Foreign Minister, Maxime Prévot, condemned Rwanda’s move as “disproportionate” and announced that Belgium would respond by terminating all governmental cooperation agreements with Rwanda. He also stated that Rwandan diplomats would no longer be welcome in Belgium.

Still on Rwanda expels Belgian diplomats: The diplomatic fallout is rooted in accusations that Rwanda is backing the M23 rebels in eastern DRC, who have recently taken control of Goma and Bukavu, leading to significant casualties and displacement. The DRC government and Belgium have accused Rwanda of using the rebels to gain influence over the resource-rich region, while the M23 claims to be protecting the rights of ethnic Tutsis.

Last month, Rwanda suspended its 2024-2029 bilateral aid program with Belgium, accusing the country of restricting its access to development funding. Belgium, meanwhile, has continued to push for a peaceful resolution to the DRC crisis.

This diplomatic rift comes as the European Union announced sanctions against nine individuals—five of whom are Rwandans—linked to the violence in the DRC. Meanwhile, the DRC has confirmed its participation in peace talks with the M23 rebels, set to take place in Angola.
