Russia delays Ukraine peace: Donald Trump, US president, said that he believed Russia wanted to end the war in Ukraine but Moscow may be “dragging its feet” because the Kremlin has disputed US accounts regarding agreements.
He made his comments just hours after Russia announced that it would implement an agreement mediated by the US to cease using force on the Black Sea only once sanctions against its exports and banks imposed over its invasion in Ukraine were lifted.
Russia delays Ukraine peace: The White House announced on Tuesday, after days of negotiations in Saudi Arabia with officials from Ukraine and Russia, that both sides agreed to “ensure safe navigation in the Black Sea, prevent the use commercial vessels for military purpose, and eliminate force.”
Zelensky’s news conference confirmed that Ukraine agreed to cease using force on its shores of the Black Sea. However, Kremlin issued a statement about the discussions, including a list of conditions to sign up for the partial truce.
These included the lifting of sanctions against its agricultural bank, other financial institutions involved in food exports and related companies and their reconnecting to SWIFT’s international payment system.
In their statements, the US did not mention that the lifting of sanctions was a condition for a ceasefire.
Trump stated that “I believe Russia and (Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky) would both like it to end at this time,” he said.
Trump stated that his administration is looking into the conditions in Russia.
We’re all thinking of them at the moment. Five or six conditions are required. “We are looking into all of them,” said he.
According to the White House, Russia and Ukraine have also agreed that they will implement an earlier announced pause in attacks on energy infrastructure.
Details of the agreement are also unclear. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s spokesperson on Wednesday, said that Russia has stopped targeting energy infrastructure since March 18 when Trump and Putin discussed their proposal in a telephone call.
Ukraine, however, has claimed that Moscow continued to strike its infrastructure over the last week. An aide of Zelensky said there were at least eight attacks.
Russia also accused Kyiv, of attacking their own installations, such as an oil pumping facility in Krasnodar, a region located south of Russia.
