Pandemonium broke out in Atakpa, near the popular Watt Market in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, on Sunday, March 23, after an armed policeman allegedly opened fire, killing four innocent passersby.
Eyewitnesses reported that the officer went berserk, firing multiple gunshots into the air, with stray bullets fatally striking the victims.
“The victims were just passersby with no conflict or altercation with the officer. It seemed like he lost control,” a witness recounted.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Cross River State Command, SP Irene Ugbo, stated:
“The officer misbehaved, and we suspect he may be mentally unstable. This is our initial assessment, but investigations are ongoing to uncover the full details of the incident.”
