PM’s St. Patrick’s Day Address: March 19, 2025

It’s an absolute delight to welcome you all to Downing Street on this momentous occasion of St. Patrick’s Day. As I look around, I’m thrilled to see so many familiar faces, and I’m honored to host you all here tonight. This celebration is a testament to the strong bonds between our nations, and I’m excited to share in the joy and camaraderie that this special day brings.

As I gaze around this historic room, I’m reminded of the rich history and cultural heritage that we’re celebrating tonight. The Innova Irish dance company’s mesmerizing performance earlier this evening set the tone for what promises to be an unforgettable night. And, of course, the enchanting sounds of Tara Viscardi’s harp playing have added a touch of magic to our gathering.

As we raise a glass – or, rather, a pint of Guinness – to toast this special day, I’m reminded of the significance of this occasion. St. Patrick’s Day is more than just a celebration of Irish heritage; it’s a testament to the enduring connections between our nations and the people who call these islands home.

For me, personally, this occasion holds a special significance. My time working in Northern Ireland, particularly during the implementation of the Belfast Good Friday Agreement, was a formative experience that taught me the importance of hope, perseverance, and community. The people of Northern Ireland are truly remarkable, and I feel deeply connected to the region and its people.

As I look around this room, I’m heartened to see so many familiar faces, including some of the individuals who played a crucial role in shaping the Belfast Good Friday Agreement. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and the enduring legacy of that historic agreement.

Tonight’s celebration is also a reminder of the importance of nurturing our relationships with our closest neighbors and friends. The recent UK-Ireland Summit in Liverpool was a significant milestone in our efforts to reset and strengthen our bilateral ties. As we move forward, we’re committed to building on this momentum, exploring new opportunities for cooperation, and deepening our friendship.

As we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, let us remember the wise words of the late Queen Elizabeth II, who spoke eloquently about the importance of peace, understanding, and cooperation between our nations. Her Majesty’s words serve as a poignant reminder of the progress we’ve made and the work that still lies ahead.

In closing, I’d like to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for joining us tonight. Your presence here is a testament to the strength of our relationships and the enduring bonds between our nations. So let us raise a glass, enjoy the music, and celebrate the ties that bind us together. Sláinte!
