The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has successfully claimed all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 30 local government areas (LGAs) in Osun State.
The elections for these positions took place today, February 22.
Hashim Abioye, the Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC), made this announcement on Saturday, February 22.
Despite requests from the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, and the Police to postpone the elections, the voting proceeded as scheduled.
The AGF argued that a ruling from the Court of Appeal in Akure on February 10, 2025, had overturned the Federal High Court’s decision in Osogbo, issued on November 25, 2022. He explained that this appellate court ruling meant that the local council chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who had been removed by the earlier court, were effectively reinstated.
The police based their call for the election’s suspension on intelligence reports indicating potential security threats during the voting process.
