Nigeria and Canada Sign Code-Sharing Agreement for Airline Collaboration

The Nigerian and Canadian governments have formalized a code-sharing agreement aimed at improving efficiency and connectivity in the aviation sector.

Announcing the deal on Friday, March 21, Gbenga Saka, special adviser on digital media to Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, confirmed the agreement.

Under this arrangement, airlines from both countries can sell seats on each other’s flights, enhancing flight options and strengthening commercial ties.

During the signing ceremony, Keyamo stated, “Today, we take our relationship a step further with this crucial agreement. While it is not a full Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA), it focuses on code-sharing. We will soon designate airlines on both sides to implement this framework.”

He also noted that some airlines had already been granted approvals to operate on the route and encouraged them to seize the opportunity.

Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Pasquale Salvaggio, highlighted the importance of the agreement, explaining that “Code sharing allows an airline to place its designator codes on flights operated by another airline, enabling ticket sales on that flight and offering passengers a seamless travel experience.”

This agreement follows discussions between both nations that began in July 2024 regarding the possibility of direct flights and increased business collaboration in aviation.

Passengers traveling between Nigeria and Canada can now expect improved connectivity, easier ticketing processes, and a wider range of travel options.
