Medical emergency during appearance: Celebrity pastor T.D. Jakes has revealed that the serious medical crisis he faced last year was actually a heart attack.
He made this revelation during an exclusive interview on TODAY.
“I didn’t fully grasp what was happening to me while I was on stage until I arrived at the hospital in an ambulance, upset that it occurred during my sermon,” Jakes recounted to Craig Melvin on TODAY on March 26. “The doctor leaned in and told me, ‘You had a massive heart attack.'”
At the age of 67, Jakes was delivering a sermon at The Potter’s House on November 23, 2024, when he encountered the medical emergency. Footage from that day shows him pausing and trembling after setting down the microphone, prompting church staff to rush to his aid before the video abruptly ends.
“I didn’t recognize what was happening because I didn’t exhibit any of the typical symptoms,” Jakes explained to Craig regarding the heart attack. “No numbness, no intense pain—nothing. I just sort of faded into sleep. I had no idea what was going on, but I came close to dying.”

“The doctor told me that if it had been five minutes later, I would have been dead by the time they got me there,” he added. “The right side of my heart had completely stopped receiving blood.”
Prior to sitting down in a chair, Jakes had been standing and preaching when the heart attack struck.
“I felt perfectly fine while I was preaching,” he shared. “But once I sat down, the adrenaline faded, revealing that I had been preaching with half of my heart blocked due to a clot. They had to intervene quickly.”
The pastor also described his experience during that critical moment.
“It’s difficult for me to watch that video,” he admitted. “They had to pry the microphone from my hand. Yet in my mind, I found myself in a tranquil, serene space enveloped in white clouds.”
“I felt like I was on my way out,” he continued. “In hindsight, it was a privilege to have a glimpse of what lies beyond, or at least what it felt like for me in that moment. It was truly remarkable.”
Jakes expressed gratitude for the prayers he received from both his congregation and people worldwide.
“While they were praying for me, the surgeons were performing the operation while I was awake,” he revealed. “They never put me under anesthesia. The advancements in technology are incredible.”
