US Ends Legal Status for 500,000 Immigrants, Orders Them to Leave Within Weeks

Mass Deportation Alert

Mass Deportation Alert: The US government is revoking the legal status of more than 500,000 immigrants, giving them only weeks to leave the country.

The directive impacts approximately 532,000 individuals from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela who entered the US under a program initiated by President Joe Biden in October 2022 and expanded in January 2023.

According to the order, their legal protection will expire 30 days after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) publishes the directive in the Federal Register, which is expected on Tuesday. As a result, those affected must leave the US by April 24 unless they obtain another legal immigration status that allows them to stay.

Mass Deportation Alert:

Welcome.US, an organization assisting refugees, has urged impacted individuals to seek legal counsel immediately.

The “Processes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans, and Venezuelans” program permitted up to 30,000 migrants per month from these four nations to enter the US for two years, aiming to provide a safer alternative to illegal crossings at the US-Mexico border. Biden promoted the initiative as a “safe and humane” approach to managing immigration pressures.

However, the DHS reiterated on Friday that the program was always meant to be temporary.

“Parole is inherently temporary and does not provide a pathway to legal immigration status or constitute formal admission into the United States,” the order stated.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump recently invoked wartime legislation to deport over 200 alleged members of a Venezuelan gang to El Salvador, which has offered to detain migrants and even US citizens at reduced costs.

Trump has vowed to execute the largest deportation effort in US history, with a focus on curbing immigration from Latin American countries.
