Statue of Liberty dispute: A French member of the European Parliament, Raphael Glucksmann, has called for the United States to return the Statue of Liberty, arguing that America no longer upholds the values it symbolizes. His remarks, aimed at the U.S. under former President Donald Trump, came during a rally for his center-left Place Publique party on Sunday.

Addressing his supporters, Glucksmann declared, “To the Americans who have chosen to align with tyrants, who dismiss researchers for defending scientific freedom, we say: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty.’” He argued that the statue was a gift from France, but the U.S. now appears to disregard its meaning. “If you despise it, then it will be just fine back here at home,” he added, drawing applause from the crowd.

Glucksmann also criticized billionaire Elon Musk for his alleged role in dismantling federally backed research programs, referring to the restructuring under the so-called Department of Government Efficiency. He extended an invitation to affected scientists, saying, “If you want to fire your best researchers—those who made your country a global power through freedom and innovation—then we will welcome them.”

The Statue of Liberty, designed by French sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, was unveiled in New York Harbor on October 28, 1886, as a gift from the French people to commemorate the centennial of the American Declaration of Independence.
