Caleb Mutfwang, the Governor of Plateau State, has announced an immediate suspension of all mining activities across the state, citing growing security concerns.
The directive was issued through an executive order on Friday, February 21, and will remain in effect until further notice.
Governor Mutfwang emphasized that his administration plans to carry out a thorough assessment of the security challenges in mining areas and implement a Community Development Agreement to ensure the socio-economic benefits of mining are properly addressed.
“There is an urgent need to put measures in place to safeguard mining sites in Plateau State and to ensure that only licensed individuals are allowed to access these premises. The suspension of mining activities has become imperative,” the order stated.
The governor highlighted the rise in illegal mining operations and the associated security risks in several Local Government Areas across the state.
He also expressed concern over the increasing presence of foreigners in mining zones, which has exacerbated insecurity and led to crimes such as banditry, illegal firearm possession, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and rape.
“As the Executive Governor and Chief Security Officer of Plateau State, I, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, find it necessary to suspend all mining activities in the state to protect lives and restore security,” he declared.
Governor Mutfwang further assured that his administration would work closely with the federal government to establish proper regulations and a monitoring system. This framework will involve collaboration between the state, local governments, host communities, and mineral rights holders.
