Russia is eager to collaborate with the United States, particularly in the space sector, and is expected to engage in discussions with Elon Musk regarding Mars flights. This development was announced by Kirill Dmitriev, President Vladimir Putin’s international cooperation envoy, who expressed optimism about the prospects of Russia-U.S. cooperation.
Dmitriev emphasized that Russia’s “enemies” are attempting to undermine President Donald Trump’s efforts to reestablish dialogue with Russia. Trump and Putin were scheduled to discuss a potential ceasefire in Ukraine and a more permanent resolution to the ongoing conflict.
Russia is keen to work with SpaceX CEO Elon Musk as part of its efforts to strengthen its space agency Roscosmos and state nuclear corporation Rosatom. Dmitriev praised Musk’s innovative endeavors, stating, “I think that there will undoubtedly be a discussion with Musk (about Mars flights) in the near future”.
Notably, Musk was a significant donor to Trump’s 2024 election campaign and has become one of the president’s closest advisers. Russia had previously announced plans to launch its own Mars mission in 2022, following the European Space Agency’s (ESA) decision to suspend a joint project due to Putin’s actions in Ukraine.
The potential collaboration between Russia and Musk’s SpaceX could mark a significant development in space exploration. With Russia seeking to strengthen its space program, a partnership with SpaceX could provide valuable expertise and resources.
