Romance scam EFCC arraignment: The Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Monday, March 17, 2025, arraigned Catherine Ijeoma Ugwu before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the Borno State High Court, Maiduguri, over a N6.8 million romance scam.
According to the EFCC, Ugwu defrauded Emmanuel Ani by impersonating and falsely claiming to be his fiancée, deceiving him into sending her N6,815,300.00 for her supposed upkeep.
Still on Romance scam EFCC arraignment
She was charged on four counts, including obtaining by false pretenses, criminal misappropriation, and impersonation. One of the charges states that between June 2023 and August 2024, Ugwu fraudulently obtained N6,710,300.00 from Ani, transferring it to her Access Bank account under the false pretense of supporting his alleged fiancée, one Miss Chinansa. The EFCC emphasized that she was fully aware the claim was false, violating Section 1(3) of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud-Related Offences Act, 2006.
Ugwu pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecuting counsels S.O. Saka and Faruku Muhammad requested a trial date and for her to be remanded in a Correctional Centre.
Justice Kumaliya adjourned the trial to April 8, 2025, and ordered her remand in a Correctional Centre.
Ugwu’s arrest followed complaints from Ani, who discovered she could neither justify nor return the money she had taken from him under false pretenses.
